Marken Gjestehus, Bergen (Now City Hostel Bergen)

If you’re planning on visiting Bergen but are unsure where to stay, Marken Gjestehus is a great choice especially if you’re travelling solo. Find out why in this article

About Marken Gjestehus

If you’re heading to Bergen, Marken Gjestehus which has changed its name to City Hostel Bergen, is the perfect guesthouse/hostel for solos. Ranked the best hostel in Norway over several years, we love this stylish affordable accommodation with a choice of single and twin rooms as well as dorm rooms.

First of all, Bergen is a great destination to visit in Norway and Marken Gjestehus is located in its very heart. Bergen is Norway’s second largest city. However, it is still small and a very safe place to travel, even for solo female travellers. You can safely walk around alone, even at night, visiting all the wonderful attractions the city has to offer.

The hostel is just a two minute walk to the centre of Bergen (Torgallmenningen)  and also the city’s attractions, such as the Fish Market, Bryggen, which is on the UNESCO list, and the funicular to Mt. Fløyen. In an area referred to as ‘Bergens Notting Hill,’ you will find a good selection of cafes, hairdressers and fine speciality shops.

Amenities

The lounge is light and airy and feels really modern, with plants brightening up the decor. When you’re not exploring the city (but it is practically on your doorstep), you can relax on a sofa and watch TV in the living room.

Use the kitchen to make your own coffee or treat yourself to a cappuccino from the coffee machine. There’s also a fridge and a microwave if you want to make your own food to reduce your costs of eating out. Plus, there is a washer and dryer to get your clothes clean and fresh before moving onto your next destination in Norway.

Safety

Marken Gjestehus is a great and safe place to stay and is located in a very quiet and safe area. It is in one of the nice pedestrian areas in Bergen, near the railway station and Bergen Storsenter. Bergen itself is a really safe city. I wondered around alone here and felt very safe, plus you can lock your valuables away in the lockers to. * Check rates and availability

Rooms

They don’t have any mixed dorms, so you are guaranteed that only other women are sharing the rooms. All guests are given a locker where they can store their luggage and valuables. You do not have to bring a lock, as this is provided for you. The rooms are bright and modern and come with a desk so you can plan your next day or journal your thoughts from the day’s sightseeing.

They also have private rooms, such as single, double, triple and quadruple rooms. Some of the rooms have their own private bathroom but depending on which room type you book, you will probably have a shared bathroom with others.
